Sermon Text: John 5:1-18
This Lord’s Day we will learn about the fourth sign recorded in John’s gospel, wherein Jesus healed a disabled man. John the Evangelist, as he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, recorded seven signs that served to prove Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. In describing the disabled man’s condition, Mark Johnston explains, “The disabled man’s physical condition is a painfully graphic picture of the spiritual condition of every fallen human being. The truth about his condition was that he was powerless to do anything about it.” When Jesus healed him, our Lord demonstrated his sovereign power to restore what sin had destroyed, ultimately pointing to the blessings of regeneration and the life of the world to come.
