Sermon Text: Ruth 2:1-23
When Naomi and Ruth headed to Bethlehem, they were unsure of what to expect. Naomi and her husband, Elimelech, had left the Promised Land with their children out of disobedience to the Lord's command. Would she now be received back? And what about Ruth? She was a Moabite, which meant she was from a nation that was opposed to the One True God and his covenant people. Ruth had pledged to be with Naomi, her people, and her God. But would God show her kindness? Would they survive the deep poverty that they found themselves in? The Lord provided for Naomi and Ruth through the remarkable kindness of Boaz, a relative of Naomi's late husband. As we read about Boaz's gracious provision, we see how he points to Christ, a greater Redeemer. When we come to Christ, poor and needy as we are, we will always find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). We have been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). He has redeemed us from our sins and clothed us with his righteousness. In the New Covenant we know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sake he became poor, so that we by his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).
